Big data analysis of freight movements revolutionizes the ability of transportation planners to model and prioritize infrastructure investment based on billions of miles of vehicle trips worldwide.

Improved information for planning can yield many benefits, including cost savings on construction and rehabilitation activities, improved process efficiency, reduced congestion, lower emissions and significantly reduced crash rates.  These planning improvements allow support for anticipation and preparation of growth such that adequate truck lanes, parking, turning lanes and other freight needs are satisfied. 

Consistent with best practice privacy standards, EROAD is collaborating with a number of partners to develop new tools to improve the evaluation of transportation projects, economic forecasting, business planning, risk and insurance analysis, logistics and sector benchmarking. 

EROAD collects tens of millions of vehicle events a day; and has the scale and richness of dataset collection to power more informed decision making.

Freight movement studies utilizing EROAD’s rich dataset are able to support transportation professionals: 

  • Origin – Destination trip data supports more informed decision making regarding infrastructure investment and assistance with prioritizing competing transportation demands.
  • Real-time traffic movement data supports better understanding of operational network usage for network optimization.
  • Analysis of pan-regional driver behaviors including speed events, harsh braking, acceleration and cornering delivers insight into building a safer road network for risk and crash reduction. 


Among others, EROAD works with consultancies who undertake studies for the New Zealand Ministry of Transport who take our data and synthesize it with other sources for scaling. Below is a BECA study from last year which utilized EROAD data as a source to gain these insights.

Resiliency Planning

Data from transportation telematics can be harnessed today to assist in enhancing the contingency planning for the future. Examining and reacting to the current inventory of existing pertinent data, which can be easily acquired by the relevant government agencies responsible for transportation resilience planning, is a critical mission that EROAD supports in many ways.

  • Delivery of a reliable, resilient, and productive transportation system requires investment in long term protections against catastrophe and significant adverse events. EROAD data can be harnessed to assist in enhancing contingency planning for the future. 
  • Understanding of current freight movements, and organic re-routing when an adverse event occurs can be used to support investment in disaster preparation, and become a main driver in developing partnerships with civil and federal entities.
